Home-use lasers are my absolute favorites for beginners who don’t want the cheapest DIY option, but rather a safe and comfortable entry. In the €500 to €2,500 price range you get very good desktop-diode laser cutters (approx. 10–40 W) with enclosed casings. That casing not only protects you from laser radiation, but also makes indoor operation much safer, cleaner and more pleasant.

Another advantage: these systems are extremely easy to use and require virtually no maintenance. By contrast, many CO₂ lasers need regular mirror alignment and general upkeep — for many beginners that’s an unnecessarily complicated start.

There are truly very cheap laser cutters — especially in the entry-level segment. Unfortunately, we haven’t tested all of them yet, and some models repeatedly get criticism for being rather fragile. If you’re specifically looking for cheap machines, check out our Best-Budget top lists — here you’ll find what we consider the most interesting budget laser cutters at an acceptable risk.

Generally: Budget lasers are cheap — but often you pay with your own time instead of money.
You might need to tinker, realign parts, or build an enclosure yourself. In return, you can save a lot of money compared to “ready-made” desktop systems.

In this list, I’ve included models that offer a decent price-to-performance ratio. They basically fall into two groups:

Cheap open-frame diode lasers:
Very inexpensive, often extendable, and with a few extra profiles you can build a larger working area — ideal if you’re willing to build your own enclosure or run the laser on a balcony or in a garden. Sometimes you can find 40 W diode lasers for under €500.

K40-style CO₂ lasers (≈ 40 W):
These are the classic, very inexpensive CO₂ lasers starting at around €500 (instead of €2,000+ like many desktop CO₂ lasers). They’re great if you understand the technology and don’t mind maintenance or tinkering. For complete beginners they’re less convenient than enclosed desktop diode lasers — but from a price standpoint extremely attractive.

They are compact, lightweight and easy to transport. Most machines in this category use diode lasers with 5–15 W, ideal for engraving and thin materials like paper, cardboard or thin wood sheets. The work area is usually small — at most around 150×150 mm. Unfortunately, air-assist is usually not available on these machines, which can limit cut quality.
